Storage Resurgence Continues With Nimble’s $25M Round - Venture Capital Dispatch - WSJ
The aftermath of the sales of 3Par Inc., Data Domain Inc. and Isilon Systems Inc. has “created a void in the marketplace,” said Artis Ventures founder Stuart Peterson, leaving storage resellers with almost no options beyond the big storage companies, like Dell Inc., EMC Corp. and NetApp Inc., which rely more on their direct sales staff than smaller storage companies usually do. The $2 billion-plus price tags of those recent sales haven’t exactly hurt investor interest in storage either, he said. Those big numbers are one reason Stuart Peterson was willing to pay a “healthy valuation” to participate in Nimble’s Series D. Another reason is that Nimble, with more than 100 customers in its first year of sales, is off to a faster start than any of those other companies, he said.

Warfield building a window into S.F.’s struggles, triumphs
Until last summer, Artis Ventures CEO Stuart Peterson occupied arguably the most prestigious office space in San Francisco: a white modernist tile and glass box with bridge-to-bridge views on the top floor of the Spear Tower at One Market Street. Now his firm, which in 2010 turned a $3 million early investment in YouTube into an $85 million payday, has relocated to the second floor of the Warfield building at the corner of Taylor and Market streets, just to the west of the historic Warfield theater. Instead of watching ferries slice across the bay, he looks down upon the cross-section of humanity that is central Market Street: the down-and-out and up-and-coming, art students and con artists, social workers and social outcasts, the ever-increasing parade of bike commuters streaming downtown. The old office was “serene, in the clouds,” but he doesn’t miss the million-dollar views. “This is where the companies we are funding are; this is the epicenter of creativity and innovation,” said Peterson, walking to Miss SaiGon, the Vietnamese restaurant on Sixth Street that is a hot spot for the tech workers and venture capitalists moving into Mid-Market. “The is so much activity here. There is a renaissance going on.”

Booth Alumni Stuart Peterson Help Aspiring Entrepreneurs Look Ahead
Two venture capital veterans used hindsight to give students foresight into their VC and entrepreneurial careers at the annual SeedCon conference recently at Chicago Booth. “If I could go back in time [to become a student at Booth again], I’d try to meet everyone I could,” said Stuart Peterson, ’95, cofounder and senior partner at Artis Ventures. The San Francisco¬¬–based venture capital firm has backed such companies as YouTube and Palantir Technologies. “Classmates will help you more than you think.” Jeff Sheedy, ’95, director of international marketing at Artis Ventures, said entrepreneurs can have great ideas, but they need to surround themselves and the company with great people. “It’s not just the idea, it’s the people around you,” he said. “Having a strong team gives you an ability to deal with adversity and allows for pivots.” Peterson and Sheedy’s fireside chat wrapped up the daylong conference, organized by students. Hosted by the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the event brought together entrepreneurs and venture capitalists and featured an entrepreneurs showcase, panel discussions, and workshops. Peterson and Sheedy said it takes years for an idea to become a successful company, and the ideas will change and develop over time. The common threads, Peterson said, are “brilliant teams, brilliant ideas, and clarity of focus.” The pair offered a list of do’s and don’ts for students seeking out venture-capital firms. When meeting a firm, have a demo when giving a presentation. Try to solve a hard problem; it’s easier to attract investors that way. Know the market, share the economic studies with the team, and most importantly fully commit to the idea. Finally, follow up quickly and thoughtfully after the meeting. Don’t cold-call or cold-email. Instead have a trusted third party make a connection, as it’s too hard for people like Peterson and Sheedy to take a serious look at an idea otherwise. Think long term, so don’t ask for a non-disclosure agreement at the beginning and don’t go for quick hits. Don’t clutter up presentation slides and if you don't normally wear a suit, do not wear one. “Be comfortable with yourself and in your clothes,” Peterson said. Sheedy and Peterson said they see several big trends in health care, such as personalized medicine and targeted therapies, which for example can isolate specific cancer cells to possibly cure cancer. Digitizing health information is also a big field. Outside of "life changing trends" within health care, they said, other big “game changing trends” include the transition to public cloud computing, and the development of crypto-currencies, such as Bitcoin. Student Tibi Stef-Praun, said it was helpful to hear the thought process of the Peterson and Sheedy. “You also got the perspective of at what point you should approach a venture capitalist, too,” he said. Ryan Kern, another student, said he was interested to learn about what industries Peterson and Sheedy believe are up and coming. “They were talking about companies that may cure cancer. To hear about how personalized medicine may be related with therapeutic technology, it was something you hear a little bit about but not at the level they talked about,” Kern said.—Debbie Carlson

Early YouTube investor Stuart Peterson talks about what ...
Stuart Peterson and the small team at Artis Ventures have parlayed success as early investors in YouTube into backing startups in the storage, ... What we’re looking for are brilliant teams going after one-of-a kind opportunities and that can be across industries. I think that’s a big differentiator relative to our peers. We planted these seeds in the health sector four, five, six years ago. At the time, there were well-known newer venture firms that were raising $1 billion-plus funds that were publicly saying they would invest in everything other than health and biotech. It was a difficult time to lean against those types of trends. But some of the most interesting names we were finding were in the health space. Featured Jobs Lead Global Trade Specialist Business Oregon County Auditor County of Kaua'i Customer Service Representative-Moonlighter U-Haul See More Jobs The opportunities in health, I think, are similar to the mid-1990’s when the Internet and browsers rolled out. At the time you really couldn’t wrap your arms around what it meant but you knew it was going to be something very, very big in the longer term. Fast forward 20 years and here we are with massive access to information. Within the health and wellness space, we’ve mapped out the human genome and the price for an analysis has dropped from a few hundred million down to few thousand dollars. Over the next 24 months, it will most likely drop to a few hundred dollars. There are tailwinds around digital healthcare. There are tailwinds around targeted therapeutics, health and wellness. We were the first institutional investor in a San Francisco company called Stemcentrx which is doing targeted therapeutics. You’ll hear more about them over the next few months. We’re one of the early investors of Practice Fusion, which is a dominant vendor within electronic healthcare records, digital health. And we recently funded [a] company in the health and wellness space that we believe will be a dominant vendor as well, called Juicero. And the list goes on and on.

Stealthy Stem CentRx Raised More Than $100M From Artis Ventures and Founders Fund
StemCentRx, a company developing a “stem-cell-centric” approach to fighting cancerous tumors, has raised more than $100 million from Artis Ventures, Founders Fund and other, undisclosed investors. Startup technology companies sometimes fly under the radar for the first few years of their existence, but not many remain quiet for seven years, especially after raising more than $100 million from some of the leading investors in Silicon Valley. But that is the story of Stem CentRx Inc., a company developing a "stem-cell-centric" approach to fighting cancerous tumors. Founded in 2008, South San Francisco, Calif.-based Stem CentRx has been developing drugs and diagnostics to attack only the dangerous parts of solid-state tumors, the "seed cells" that are proliferating dangerously inside the body, said Stuart Peterson, a co-founder and senior partner at Artis Ventures . Artis, he said, was the first institutional investor in Stem CentRx, later joined by Founders Fund and other, undisclosed investors. Mr. Peterson and Founders Fund Partner Brian Singerman both hold board seats at the company. Mr. Peterson declined to specify how much funding the company has raised, and also declined to give details on the clinical progress of the company's monoclonal antibodies and diagnostics platform....
